Building a Cover Letter

Saturday, January 2910:30 AM—12:00 PMZoom

Join our digital literacy instructor Robert and learn how to write a strong cover letter for any job application. A cover letter accompanies your resume in an online job application and is a chance to introduce yourself and express your interest in the position, your qualifications, and any relevant experience. It is a critical part of any job application. Even if the job listing doesn’t ask for a cover letter it’s definitely best to include one.

A strong cover letter is well-written (grammar, spelling, and punctuation count) and to the point. We will discuss how to research a prospective employer and incorporate some of their language into your cover letter. It shows you’ve done your homework and are seriously interested in the position. We will also discuss the structure of a good cover letter and how it is crucial to tailor each cover letter to the specific position you are applying for. Robert will provide some example cover letters and together we will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each one to hone your editing skills. We will finish with a Q&A session and will provide resources to learn from on your own beyond this class.
